I don't know why so many people are obsessed with controlling immigration from the EU. Free movement of people is just a convenient stick with which to beat Brussels. Brexit will make negligible difference to overall immigration numbers. How do you suppose all the Ghanaians, Nigerians, Brazilians, Colombians, Peruvians and Ecuadorians living in London come to be here? Answer: lax border control systems, which facilitate overstaying. Other European countries require resident foreign nationals to register with the authorities, but in the UK, once in, they can disappear. On a related point, it's often argued by Brexiteers that we can have a visa system which will still allow those EU citizens whose services are needed by this country to live and work here. All I can say is that, if such a visa system were to work on similar lines to the current Tier-2 visa system, then small firms could kiss goodbye to hiring staff with specialist skills from Europe - the hoops they would have to jump through to prove that UK citizens of comparable skills/qualifications were not available would render the whole exercise a waste of time and money. |
