Coincidentally, there is a front page article in today's Times "Diesel cars pumping out twice the toxins of lorries and buses" (paywalled). Real world testing of cars, lorries and buses has measured over twice the NOx pollutants from new diesel cars compared to the latest lorries and buses. It appears this is because of tougher official testing for lorries and buses compared to cars. Since 2014, lorries and buses have been subject to random tests on the road. However cars are only tested in laboratory conditions. Manufacturers specially prepare cars for these tests, there has been the example of VW deliberately cheating tests and the lab tests bear little relation to real world urban driving conditions anyway. |
