Buses are both part of the solution and part of the problem. The fleet is being upgraded slowly and a newer bus is unlikely to give the same reading as those in video but highly polluting older buses are still likely to be with us at some time. Your idea of allocating less polluting buses to routes where the air quality is worst is a good one but I'm not sure Chiswick would be first in the queue - many routes across London go through areas with poorer air quality and we may find that cleaner buses are taken away from us. Perhaps before getting too concerned it should be borne in mind that there doesn't seem to be any evidence that I am aware of that people in Chiswick are more likely to develop respiratory conditions. Certainly a trip the High Road on a hot day when there is lots of traffic can be intolerable for someone with a breathing disorder but for most people I think it remains the case that, on the balance of probability, a trip to the High Road remains pretty riskless as regards what you breath in. |
