From the Sunday Times 25th October 2015 - all they will let me post:- Children living in high pollution areas face an increased risk of diseases such as asthma and bronchitis THE growth of children’s lungs is being stunted by the high levels of air pollution in parts of Britain’s cities, a pioneering study has found. The children, aged 8 and 9 and living in areas with high levels of particulates and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) from diesel cars, have up to 10% less lung capacity than normal. They face the prospect of a permanent reduction in lung capacity and an increased risk of lung diseases such as asthma and bronchitis, according to the scientists. “The data shows that traffic pollution stops children’s lungs growing properly,” said Ian Mudway, a respiratory toxicologist at King’s College London. “The evidence suggests that by 8-9 years old, children from the most polluted areas have 5-10% less lung capacity and they may never get that back.” |
