'The problem does not seem to discourage the habituees of the many cafes restaurants and bars utilising outdoor seating in the High Road.' The question is should it? The researchers making the measurements in the video claimed that no level is safe but that isn't really very helpful. There needs to be a clearer picture of the level of risk. As I grew up in an environment with much worse air pollution and don't seem to have developed any resulting problems I would quite happily have taken my children to a cafe on the High Road. The work by Dr Mudway cited by Clare does give pause for thought but when I looked into it further it seems his data was gathered from around the Tower Hamlets area and there could be a whole number of cultural and economic factors accounting for differences in children's lung size. One possibility is that a contributory factor is not so much pollution but fear of pollution with parents discouraging their children from walking and playing outside. The resulting lack of exercise could just as easily explain the difference in lung development. |
