By sheer coincidence the front page of the website now has a story about local protestors against the third LHR runway claiming that the resultant pollution will put children's health at risk... I don't know enough about medical stuff to strongly argue the case but I'm assuming that the people using this argument against the third runway will also support initiatives to reduce pollution on CHR, even if it means driving less themselves... I think there is still a long way to go to reduce private car trips. This TfL study estimated that about 35% of motor vehicle trips could be taken by bike. Their criteria could be argued as well as they assumed people over 64 wouldn't cycle... https://www.london.gov.uk/sites/default/files/analysis-of-cycling-potential.pdf The school run is an obvious thing to look at although few parents would let their kids cycle along roads as they are at the moment. I have seen wheelchair space in buses used a lot more for baby buggies than wheelchairs although I think for older models of buses before the advent of monster truck baby buggies, parents had to fold them on board a bus. |
