I read initially Jill Merrett’s post with a small chuckle.  After all, we should keep a sense of humour over the Brexit vote notwithstanding the economic devastation, legal chaos and damage to our social cohesion it will cause (if followed through).

But then I read her response to Matteo Castagna.  “Adios amigo”.  That age old racist call of “go home”.  That is unacceptable.  The fact, Jill, that you can (almost) say it in Spanish does not make you any less despicable for doing so, or your sentiments any less venial.  (And you also show your ignorance by your inability to distinguish between names of Spanish origin and of Italian origin – but perhaps all “foreigners” are the same to you).

If Matteo did not appreciate the “joke”, that is understandable if he (as his name might indicate, or might because many British people have “foreign sounding names”) is one of those hundreds of thousands of people whose lives have been thrown into uncertainty by the vote last week, or who have may now feel uncomfortable about how welcome they are in this country.

Matteo, my friend, I do not know you from Adam, but I truly believe that those people who have been emboldened to crawl out from under their stones in the last few weeks represent a small minority of people in this country. I, and I believe the vast majority of other people, find Jill Merrett’s response to you deeply and unacceptably offensive.  Take no notice, you are more than welcome to exercise your right to live wherever you choose.

Then the usual suspects enter the fray: - those named that, as soon as we see them on a W4 thread, tell us that it is about to descend into a playground slanging match.

Loraine Pemberton sees her chance to chip in with unjustified comments about “unpleasant and vitriolic” (in fact two of her own favourite bedfellows), and prattles on about the “British Empire”.  What? (Gibraltar?). Where on earth have you been since 1947?

Then Claire Moran, telling us that she does not support the EU because the only way that it enforces its Environmental Laws is by fining countries.  What is it supposed to do?  “Nuke” them? (Notwithstanding that the EU does not have any military capability).

Then Loraine Pemberton is back in again, with her own, personal out and out lie (about which she appears to remain shameless).  But that does not matter anymore, because “all politicians lie”, and any mendacity is justifiable now, if the means serve the ends.

So we see riding together in a single thread all the “Four Horsemen of the Referendum”: Racism: Jingoism: Idiocy: and Mendacity.

I am not saying that everyone who supports “Exit” is a racist. Far from it.  But those who are not have found yourselves some seriously unpleasant travelling companions for your journey.

There are some valid arguments for questioning the EU; whether as a country we should make important decisions that affect us all with our near neighbours, or should do so unilaterally; the fact that although the EU is a free market internally it still contains some aspects of “fortress Europe” against the rest of the World, etc.  Personally, I do not agree with them, but they are valid arguments none the less that should have been put forward during the debate, but were not. Instead we were fed lies, and saw a campaign based, to a great extent, on old fashioned racism where the official “Leave” campaign was happy to have Farrage and Co as their henchmen to do their dirty work.

And as a consequence, we end up (even in Chiswick) with posts like this thread.
