| Surprised to see Jill Merrett and Lorraine Pemberton acting as such enthusiastic advocates for leaving the EU as they regularly tell us about how much they care about animals. Regulation of animal welfare in agriculture is currently made by the EU and is the most stringent in the world. As the Government post Brexit probably won't be able to afford to continue the subsidies to farmers so one way they will seek to compensate them is by 'cutting red tape'. This inevitably include measures to protect animals from unnecessary suffering. The EU has also ensured that this country has a highly rigorous regime when it comes to animal testing. Pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies post Brexit are likely to make investment in research in the UK conditional on a more 'liberal' regulatory environment. We will be so desperate for inward investment that the Government will have little choice but to concede. Still they are only animals and after all we have taken back control and are Grrrreeeatt again. |
