| Anyone who thinks this is a game needs a word with themselves. Any view that sets out claims of victory with a vote or of sour grapes from others really does not understand the grave issues that this ill-conceived referendum creates. This is not a bit of fun. Nor, as many seem to think, was this the place for a protest vote. It was not suitable for a protest against UK politics nor against the EU administration. The reason - the result is not (and never would be) a penalty for anyone other than the UK. The clarity and scale of the issues this vote is creating for the UK is now becoming clear. Do not think this is a start of a UK resurgence. There is no evidence that coming years of confusion and subsequent exclusion will create wealth. Do not think that a temporary lull in the declines is the same as an immediate recovery. This is days into a long painful process. Years with declining exports and ramping up negative balance of payments. A chancellor delighted to be let off the hook of balancing the UK deficit - but what are the consequences here? And this is just the very beginning. Its going to get worse as every element and aspect of our place in the world and in world trade is challenged. I hope you are optimistic and happy in giving the EU the fingers. Well done. No sour grapes. Simply sadness that so many in the nation mis-understood the nature of the vote and the consequences of voting the wrong way. |
