| We Kiwis whose fathers and grandfathers (and mothers and grandmothers) fought alongside the other Allies for peace have long been well accustomed to standing in the non-preferred queues at Heathrow. Kiwis and Aussies who prop up many of the London local authority work forces now have limited tenure in such jobs, so we know well what it's like to be off the UK Christmas card list. But my wife and kids have (had?) EU passports, with all the opportunities these promised, and I have indefinite leave to remain (return) to the UK. Had I not decided to return to NZ I probably would have had dual NZ/UK citizenship by now. I was looking forward to attending the ceremony officiated by the Mayor of Hounslow. |
