There are basically 3 groups of recyclers. 1 those who recycle everything possible 2 medium recyclers. Newspapers, glass bottles and cardboard boxes, which are big and heavy in the kitchen bin 3 nothing. No time for it. The household recycling bill set up by Foe became an Act and all households had to be able to recycle at least 2 materials. A major change with green boxes arriving. Then there was the EU setting targets and more things had to be recycled and greater participation. Hounslow set up CRAG and BRAG doing roadshows in the High Road and outside Sainsburys. Meetings were held weekly in the Town Hall. CRAG eventually stopped because the members realised that they were working extremely hard going round all the houses with leaflets, monitoring and completing surveys which weren't making much difference. It was and still is optional with no personal cost to ourselves. I gave up with CRAG but set up Zero Waste for Green Days. A mighty task with 85 recycling bins and publicity. " Make Green Days Green" All the bins had to be supervised because even though they were clearly labelled and many people were applying themselves to it there were hundreds of people who just threw everything into any bin. We even had bins for chewing gum and cigarette ends It was however hugely promotional and there were many enquiries afterwards about what to do with ironing boards, light bulbs, CDs etc. So it was a big help with Chiswick. Then it was a massive job at City Hall for all 33 boroughs and beyond and not just for household. Analyses for all the boroughs and what they were doing. It was obvious what was working best with household but it was still optional. A WRAP funded lady happened to arrive when I was doing some gardening. She'd come to the right place! Gave up with the clipboard and admitted that if she got any reply from doorbells there was a general lack of enthusiasm. Either they do or they don't. Mind your own business. It's obvious that with a transient and rapidly increasing population we have to pay if we don't. Food waste is the least popular. If they aren't properly lined they have to be cleaned. Walking round the local streets it's evident how many people don't. |
