Some of my ancestors worked 12 and 14 hour days in the cotton mills or in factories in the north. All for an absolute pittance, barely subsistance wages with periods of their lives in the workhouse. They also had to rent their freezing colsd and massively overcrowded houses and in many cases had to buy their provisions from shops owned by the mill owners. Some were even paid in tokens instead of money so that they could not buy from anywhere else.If they complained or left the employment they were barred from work elsewhere. All whilst the cotton and iron and steel barons made millions. |
