On 6th August 1962 Jamaica gained political independence from the UK with the white Jamaicans getting even richer and the black Jamaicans even poorer. The Jamaican political, legal and social system retained all of the 18th century rules, laws and regulations and did not progress and still hasn't! Gt Britain made billions from Jamaica mainly from Sugar Plantations and the Slave Trade for some 300 years. Currently the average wage (weekly) is equivalent to £50/60 per week for working a 12 hour day. And most employment is from tourism from "all inclusive operators" so no tips either. Poverty is rife in Jamaica and with poverty comes crime. If someone is arrested it's 99% certain they will be convicted and end up in prison, irrespective of their guilt or innocence, and the Police in Jamaica are pretty much corrupt. The prisons in Jamaica closely resemble English 18th century jails - no sanitary facilities except on a block by block basis, as for showers - what showers ? And the food is, I'm reliably informed, disgusting. I have friends and family in Jamaica who are part of the 'fortunate' community and I know the island and its people well, so the UK funding a new Prison is the very least we can do, bearing in mind what we have taken from and inflicted on Jamaica and its population. |
