What has brought zero hours contracts into the limelight in recent years is the fact that the unemployed can have their benefits terminated if they refuse to consider a job based on a zero hours contract. The "reduction" in unemployment that the Coalition frequently boasts of hides the fact that many people who were previously unemployed are now living hand to mouth in jobs where their hours and incomes are subject to significant fluctuations. Of course there is nothing wrong with zero hours contracts where both employer and employee find them convenient. However, when the contract of employment is "zero hours or nothing" and the employee is coerced into the uncertainty this should not be acceptable. |
