"I abhor them and wish they were illegal." When independently surveyed the overwhelming majority of people on zero hours contracts like working this way. Real people lead complex and flexible lives, the pressures of being a single parent, carer, mature student, a start-up entrepreneur or someone recovering from or coping with physical or mental illness, can mean that a conventional 9 to 5 contract just would not suit your personal circumstances. No one is forced to sign up for a zero hours contract so why make them illegal for those people who like working this way? For many this is a way back into the labour market (hurray) or simply fits their life-style. Even if your "right on ideology" leads you to "abhor" zero hours contracts what gives you the right to deny other people the right to work in this way? None of this means that employees rights should not be protected and that doing this effectively may be more of a challenge than it is for 9 - 5 salaried staff. But please lets be a little more grown up about this and not paint the world of work in terms of black and white when really there are just lots of shades of grey. Lets tease out the issues and find ways of resolving any serious problems that cannot be resolved through the application of existing employment law and regulations. |
