Sam I 'abhor' them because the show absolutely no commitment from the employer to the employee. I respect the fact that that swings both ways but is that any way to build a business? I first encountered these when helping companies to relocate call centres from the south east to areas of high unemployment. The difference at the time (2000-2012) was that there was a minimum hours guarantee - often around 700 hours per annum for part time staff and 1800 hours for FTE jobs. It allowed the employer flexibility and gave the employee a guarantee that there would be work for them. Zero hours is not a reduction in scale but a total disregard for any attempt to form a balanced relationship between employer and employee. |
