I buy a lot of stuff at Sports Direct and conscious of the low prices and some of the criticism the firm has attracted I've often taken the time to chat to staff and ask them what they thought about the firm. Jobs at Sports Direct are actually very sought after by people in their early twenties who value the flexibility. Lots of people apply and don't get a position. If you are travelling or still studying or simply have a very active social life it can work for you. The pay is poor but there are staff discounts. They apparently monitor your sales performance of key items quite closely and you'll get all the shifts you want if you meet them. People who don't get many shifts are those who the manager doesn't think do a good job and they will eventually get the message and move on probably within a couple of weeks. I've never come across anybody who works there because they are desperate and staff always give the impression of relishing their work which is hard to face. Mike Ashley clearly isn't a particularly nice person but he gives employment to tens of thousands of people who, in the main, seem to have made a positive decision to work for the firm rather than being forced into it through lack of choice. |
