The trouble with Zero Hours is that whilst employees have a Contract to work, the employer has no real obligation to give all his employees paid work as it's on an "as and when needed" basis! So Zero Hour contracts are weighted in favour of the employer. The contractual terms need to be amended with a guarantee of a minimum number of hours each week for employees so they can actually 'live' pay their bills, feed and clothe themselves and contribute to the overall UK economy. Zero Hours does not engender employee loyalty to the employer and probably contributes to poor customer service - after all where is the incentive to perform well if the employees only work say 15 hours per week on minimum wage? |
