Paul, you are wrong to say that Labour will not legislate against zero hours contracts. Ed Miliband has called on them to be banned. It may be that this ill-thought out pronouncement might not make it into the manifesto but this thread shows how many people uncritically accept that they are a bad thing so it may be regarded as a vote-winner even if the economic consequences are negative. It also isn't the case that benefits claimants have been forced to take zero hours contract jobs for a few years. It is only with the introduction of the universal benefits system that job centres can insist on a claimant taking such a job but only when they think it is an appropriate one and benefits are still paid if the claimant gets no work under the contract. Ultimately, a low paid insecure job is better than unemployment. Unless Labour have worked out a way to create half a million well paid secure jobs for those currently on zero hours contracts banning them will just mean depriving a large number of people the dignity provided by work. |
