Andy - it would be wrong of me to say I appreciate your personal situation because I'm not in the same situation and I can only imagine it, so I wouldn't ever pretend to fully appreciate. However, in terms of traffic issues like this, to me there isn't really an answer which could address the genuine needs of a small minority. Paul - no need for the sarcasm re. me being 'frightfully clever' (never understand the need for personal attacks when the thread is about a general issue). I'm not convinced about people having no choice or being unaware, in my view too many people travel by car regardless of choice or awareness, and whilst there's no doubt some people either have to travel by car or weren't aware, I certainly don't think such people would be in the majority. As for your latter points, to me the issue of the effectiveness of diversions and mitigation is a non-starter, because of the reliance most people have on their cars the reality is that any closure of a major route will cause the type of disruption we've seen over recent weekends. To me the only difference would be that better signage might deter/prevent people from trying to use back roads/residential streets as a short-cut, which would of course helps residents of Thames Road, but arguably this would only increase the delays on the main road network. |
