Adam, we take your point that you are frightfully clever in not going out in your car for the last two weekends. However, the chances are that the vast majority of people stuck in jams either had no choice but to travel on the roads at the time of the closure or didn't know the closure was taking place. The almost universal opinion of people whose roads were clogged up by displaced traffic was that the signage was inadequate and the diversions were poorly thought out. There clearly is a lack of co-ordination between TfL and Hounslow during these closures and the suspicion raised elsewhere that Hounslow sees these traffic problems as a revenue opportunity as opposed to a problem they need to try to mitigate appears well founded. The first and easiest thing that Hounslow should do when closures of a similar nature are likely to cause disruption is consult properly with local residents and tell them in advance what diversions and traffic mitigation strategies are proposed. People who live in the area are the best qualified to assess whether these measures would actually work. |
