Caroline I can understand the call of the mountains.  If you are booked to go and joining others I suggest that you take it easy.  Stick to easy reds and avoid all mogul fields and off piste and though not as exciting you should be able to join them for lunch.  No black runs and definitely no speeding but elegant and technically perfect turns on the motorway runs should see you get some fun relatively safely.

Avoid snowboarders and try to get someone to ski fairly close behind you.

The insurance point is a good one.  If you are skiing in France check out the insurance you can get with your lift pass.  They don't ask questions and will cover getting you off the mountain.

Take a book plus swimmers and you should survive fine.  Above all keep your back warm.
