UKIP may outpoll the SNP throughout the UK but its vote is spread out over many more constituencies. UKIP is an irrelevance in Scotland, where Farage is seen as merely a more extreme version of the Three Stooges. The only seat I can see it winning next year will possibly be Clacton, if it wins the by-election next month which I would expect to be the case. The SNP's task for 2015, and for the Holyrood election in 2016, is simple. It needs to monopolise the pro-independence vote. In an indescribably shameless act of chutzpah today Labour issued an appeal to Yes voters to "come home" to them as the party of social justice, the NHS, free green stamps etc. Judging from the way its membership north of the border is collapsing that kind of bare-faced approach is only likely to lead to faster rejection. |
