I am personally not a supporter of referenda or referendums. Far too dangerous as the population could well be swayed by pure emotion and without the full facts at their finger tips or an understanding of the consequences of their vote. We vote for politicans who are supposed to be knowledgeable about the ramifications of government - we entrust them to act in the very best interests of the people and the country. If every decision had to be voted on by the masses we'd grind to a halt - we have to trust the people we vote into power - that's their job. I also query a lot of the devolution aspects - I'm none too sure we aren't just adding yet another layer of salaried people to government. If the quality of many of the current LBH councillors is anything to go by, I quake to think of the ensuing mayhem should they be given even greater powers! I exclude our own local Chiswick Councillors from my comments - I think they serve us pretty well. |
