Phil, nicely articulated. And I suspect the clamour for another referendum will gather pace over coming years. First, the tories need to fufill their commitment to a referendum over UK's EU status. With UKIP gathering pace south of the border this referendum is likely to result in a strong push to exit the EU. But that will the be opposite of the popular vote in Scotland. Add that to the outcome in the next general election - very likely to be strong south / north (that is north england and further north) split becoming even more apparent. Plus a good smattering of UKIP representation at Westminster. At that point, Scotland will shout loud that the Scotland looks nothing like, thinks nothing like and behaves nothing like what Westinster will become. Plus, a few more over-55's in Scotland will have left the voting register so the quiet majority will be lessened. So the next referendum for independence will almost certainly be a different result. I give it 5 years, max 10. (Enough time to bring back Mr Salmond.) |
