Referenda are an absolute necessity and a fundamental tenet of a democratic society. The Scottish referendum is rightly being seen across the world as a model of a democratic society, unlike some of the more corrupt ones that have been held– as per the recent Russia/Ukriane one. A single government voted in every few years is too ‘big brush’ to deal with all the issues. People who don’t agree with referenda might prefer living somewhere like China – autocracy does make things simple after all. But too many referenda can be unhelpful. What worries me is if we vote to come out of the EU, - which while unlikely is possible - in the next referendum which will be about that topic and which will happen if the Tories get voted in again – increasingly likely unless Ed manages Houdini-lie to extricate himself from the trap cleverly sprung for him by the devilish Tories regarding Scottish devolution – we will, if there is another referendum in a few years and Yeses win – likely if Labour, because of Cameron’s trap, lose votes to the SNP – become a small little country unable to hold our own against the EU trading block, defend our borders (the Scots are keen on immigration apparently due to the declining birthrate); marshall a big enough defence force; and provide enough goods and services to trade viably across borders or even with one another. Sorry about all those clauses, can’t be bothered to rewrite but you get the drift. And then if devolution max is rolled out to London, Cornwall, Wales etc, perhaps Birmingham will become the centre of little England, no longer with Scotland and no longer part of the EU, with many parts of it devolved and looking after its own little interests. Until Birmingham gets devolved too, of course which would be interesting -it could become an Islamic state! |
