Trudie Under our democratic system, the people lend their elected representatives their powers and rights until the next election, when they are returned to the people and they can decide which set of elected representatives to lend them to next. When the elected representatives propose to vary those rights - by part of the country seceding, or by handing over powers to the EU - so that what they return to the people at the end of their period in office may be significantly different from what they were entrusted with at the start, then it is only right that the people should be consulted by referendum. As far as the Chiswick councillors are concerned, I would say they are a mixed bag - some are far more visible and helpful than others. None of them have the power to sway the majority on LBH when they have their minds set on doing something foolish. |
