Oh come on Vanessa, for the Labour Party this was all about fighting for the best interests of the Labour Party. In the name of that cause Gordon Brown did a fine job. He will, I am sure, receive all the credit he is due from those of you on whose behalf he acted. He was passionate for his cause and came across well. But please let us not start pretending this was some great moral crusade on behalf of the Scottish nation. He was doing what politicians do best - looking out for his own tribe. Labour badly let down the ordinary Scottish people who as the scenes which made it to our TV screens last night showed us have been abandoned to the mercies of the baying flag-burners and the bigots, and it will cost them at the general election. Now when the ink has barely dried on the ballot papers the two main parties are already jockeying for position trying to exploit the chaos they created by searching for a new formula which will deliver each of them some kind of fresh advantage over the other. The West Lothian question, an English parliament which could be used to undermine the UK parliament if it is of the "wrong" political complexion - you name it, it's all there. Mark my words the whole process of delivering on the promises made to the Scots will hit problems all the way along the line because the priority of so many of those involved will be to outflank their political rivals. In the meantime Scottish people will become more embittered and the clamour for a new referendum will become more and more difficult to resist. It has already begun. |
