Pubs selling a pint for £6 that you can buy in Lidls for £2 can’t help.  And there are now many other ways of communicating with friends than meeting up in a pub for a few rounds and a chinwag. And we don’t all pour out of the factory gates and aim straight for the nearby pub, as there are fewer factory gates and I suspect more people now work irregular ‘gig’ hours or WFH than do a regular eight hour day.
