"Cyclists use pavements because they feel unsafe on the road. Give them a safe cycle lane and they won't want to go on the pavement" So, Ken, let's just ignore your pal Tony's comment about faster cyclists staying on the carriageway and avoiding a cycle lane. That already disproves your theory once. But just for fun, let's disprove it again. In the areas where the cycle lane is the same height as the footpath separated by what is ostensibly a flush kerb (raised about an inch is it?) cycles approaching from opposite directions on a cycle path too narrow per TfL safety guidelines would have to swerve to avoid collision. Fool me once. Hence the second time said cyclist has every reason to not want to use a poorly designed "amenity" and will end up on the footpath anyway. Why? Because the cycle lane itself made them feel unsafe. No one wants to be fooled twice. Bravo. Good campaigning. I shudder to think what the discussion will be when cyclists collide into themselves on the cycle lane which is precisely what happens elsewhere in London. |
