I live in Hammersmith but subscribe to ChiswickW4.com. Chiswick residents have managed to avoid Clone Town so far, but the future looks much more bleak in Hammersmith. The west end of King Street, around Hammersmith Town Hall, is about to be turned into a Clone Town if the Council gets its way: it wants to imposes a HUGE development of 320 luxury appartments in tower blocks. This is a dense development (more dense than Knightsbridge) with two of the towers rising to 14 storeys, and none less than 7 storeys. It will encase the existing Grade 2 listed Town Hall. Please see Saveourskyline.co.uk for details and please, please sign our on-line petition ASAP and write to protest to the Planning Officer for "King Street Regeneration" at the Town Hall, Hammersmith. It is clear that there will be nearly no new retail outlets: just one or two coffee shops or restaurants and a handful of other shops. With the rents likely to be asked, it is doubtful if any independently-owned concerns will be able to take them up. King Street will be even more of a Clone High Street than it already is. |
