Andy, I was about to post on similar lines but you beat me to it (and phrased it better!). The survey results are only as good as the questions asked, and assuming that independents must be better than chains is highly questionable. For example, many of the independent shops in Shepherd's Bush (which scored well) are convenience stores: small range of basic items at high prices; I would rather use Sainsbury's Local for those items. In general I would rather have all the chains AND the good independents. I think the same argument applies to restaurants. Yes, there are chains and upmarket restaurants but Patrick could have included in the midish-market: gastro pubs (at least 4); Thai (numerous); Lebanese; non-chain Italians (2); bistros (Charlotte's, Cote, Sam's, Carvosso's; Pissarro's; Annie's). Hammersmith is certainly where the good Indian restaurants cluster, and in general (except for Thai) has more and better Asian restaurants, but that is its only real area of advantage in food. |
