Hammersmith has always been completely soulless and with the exception of places like Brook Green and Brackenbury Village lacks any real community. This is partly because it as far more big corporate employers like Disney and Coca Cola and people who work there tend not to live there. Chiswick has far more independent businesses and that is probably why we have a thriving and popular community site like ChiswickW4.com and Hammersmith's is relatively dormant. There is also a huge population turnover in Hammersmith. Generally homes are smaller there so people see it as a step on the property ladder and tend not to stay when they have kids. The plans to build some tower blocks on King Street are the sort of thing we've seen on Chiswick High Road a couple of times in recent years but they have been seen off by the strength of community action. It remains to be seen if Hammersmith can do the same but I'm not optimistic. |
