Sorry David, I thought you were opposing LHR. But what I meant by the effect of the A4 on the community is far more than noise (although that is a big problem). It's a physical barrier - people don't like to walk under the underpasses, and the limited road crossings cause congestion and delay. It has really divided Chiswick into South and North, putting a rail line through a town would do the same unless it were in a tunnel. I do like trains, but I hate their prices - even where rail fares are cheap it's because of public subsidy - I get the feeling that the cost of the permanent way makes trains inherently expensive - whereas air travel, having less infrastructure is much cheaper. Personally I'd like to see a greater effort into greening air travel than a massive rail building programme. |
