"Hurrah, more jobs for the area, more people in gainful employment, perhaps a few NIMBYs moving away, deep joy!" In your dreams... Jobs and gainful employment are no use if they cause cancer due to air pollution in the place where you work. That goes for road pollution as well, but kerosene fumes from planes fall from above, and are carried by the winds, which means they can be more pervasive and cover a far wider area. More planes equals more keroesene fumes, enough to eventually become as problematic as car fumes on main roads. More cancers equals more expense for the NHS (and the taxpayer), which cancels the other economic benefits. Also, it's not very ethical to be lied to by the country's governments (of all colours) because they are in the pocket of BAA (Ferrovial). I haven't used Heathrow for at least 12 years. Gatwick all the way for me. |
