So how did the French build a high speed rail link to the channel tunnel by 1993, when it took us until 2007? It does require serious investment, but it was British Rail that wasn't good at Railways, and the badly privatised Railtrack wasn't much better! The impact on communities trains run through is much exagerated by nimbys. Property prices are not affected, and the hens don't stop laying! The engineering of effective permanent way is not beyond us, and is easily sound proofed if necessary. Let the French do it as part of building our new nuclear power stations? |
