I've never understood why all runways at Heathrow must run east-west. Other big airports in Western Europe have runways running to different points of the compass. If there were two north/south runways starting at a point to the south and west of 28 R (and running to the south, away from Ts 4 and 5), it would give extra capacity without burdening the people of West London. On westerlies, the existing runways could be used for landings with the new N/S runways for take offs. On easterlies, N/S runways could take landings with the existing runways for takeoffs.... But I disagree with Iris about the relative merits of Runway 3 v Mixed Mode. Richard's evidence seems pretty decisive..... |
