Calm down Gary! Just because Heathrow was there before us doesn't mean it's immovable and inevitable. Things have changed so much in the last 25 years. The link has been established between Kerosene fumes and cancer just like the link between asbestos and coal dust and various terminal diseases. Global warming is a real and present danger, the planes have got larger, if quieter, and terrorism has reached new levels. Wait until an A380 goes down on Windsor or the fuel farm blows up? People will be asking why Heathrow wasn't moved years ago! Don't get me wrong, I love air travel, and took my first flight from Heathrow in 1962 on a Comet 4B, and regularly fly to south east Asia for business and pleasure. But we can't carry on like this for all sorts of new and dangerous reasons. Hounslow heath was once the flat and fertile market garden of London, and the lair of highway men holding up the coaches on their way to Bath! It would now make a valuable site for overspill housing for London, with T5 as a sports and cultural centre. |
