| There is a difference between rejoining the single market and signing up to all the other stuff that EU membership requires. Unfortunately at the moment that option is not on the table - it is all or nothing. If the EU had offered David Cameron the option of an "outer ring" membership in 2015 then the referendum might well have gone the other way. Also remember that the 2005 Labour manifesto (page 84) promised a referendum on what became the Treaty of Lisbon and then they chose to go ahead and sign it without keeping that promise - therefore failing to let the electorate say that they had had enough of European integration and also proving that you can't trust Labour. If that referendum had gone ahead then the opportunity to redefine Britain's EU membership might have been available and maybe it would not have come down to an In/Out referendum in 2016. |
