Thanks for all the comments everyone, they make for an interesting read. I guess what I am trying to stimulate is a discussion that takes us all above the fray of ‘who is right, is it the cyclists or the motorists or those who belong to neither group?’ and asks whether there is a better way that we could find that would allow ALL OF US a more sustainable position than that which we seem to have today. As I said in my initial post, there are arguments on all sides of the debate. For my part, being honest, I do take fewer trips in my (electric) car than I used to but there are still times when I need to take my children further afield than we could manage on foot or by bike eg to school which I would hope most people would accept is important. Furthermore, I absolutely do not accept that I should have to have my wits about me as I walk on the pavement in case I get hit by a bike. To go back to one of my original points, frankly, seeing the emergency services stuck in traffic is something that should resonate with us all. Of course there were times this happened before but as someone who spends quite a bit of time on the High Road, I see it more frequently now than previously. I don’t have a simple solution but it just feels like it all needs a rethink. |
