James,  I already frequently use the train and the bus when appropriate.  I have a Freedom Pass so it would be stupid not to. I use it a lot for trips to Ealing, and went by train to Hammersmith the other day, fortunately I can manage the stairs at Chiswick Park. Hate the cycle lane there, and read yesterday of a cyclists knocking over an 88 year old man, he showed no remorse apparently, or so it said.  He said he had right of way. Having crossed the road there myself I would have said it was an accident waiting to happen.  No idea if the elderly gentleman is ok.
