In some areas of London, the proportion of journeys made in what the Mayor defines as "sustainable" is 80%+ already. 50% of urban trips being walked or cycles is based off the highly unrealistic notion that we'll be living in the "15 minute city" by 2030. I would trust the endless spew of numbers from Government if they weren't based on assumptions that palpably won't happen, generated by consultants who live in cloud cuckoo land - I've sat in enough meetings with enough different firms of consultants to know that they live on a different plane to the majority of people. 20% seems rather optimistic. The cost of retrofitting every property within the country are currently estimated, using the Government's own figures, to be the equivalent of annual GDP. And that is for one part of the decarbonisation agenda. The largest part, certainly, but only one part. |
