In the government's plan to decarbonise transport, net zero by 2050 requires half of all urban trips to be walked or cycled by 2030. Nobody is saying there aren't considerable costs. OBR estimate that achieving net zero will add 20% of GDP to the national debt by 2050. That's slightly less than the cost of COVID. However, if we don't get there, the hit to the UK's economy of delayed action will nearly triple the national debt by 2100. It really comes down to how we feel about our future generations paying a much steeper price for us delaying action. |
