Hi Bruce, I acknowledged the difference in VED rates though with hindsight ‘slightly higher’ is an understatement, so I stand corrected by you on that. Even so, once the VED is paid there seems little disincentive for the driver of a gas guzzling, heavy CO2 emitting vehicle to drive wherever they want (LTNs notwithstanding) - if there was they wouldn’t be doing it so much! I assume that CO2 emissions and MPG are closely linked and that’s where the simple to implement idea of making fuel more expensive has a little problem. I would want it to cost someone who is driving a 25mpg car 25 miles, MORE than twice what it would cost someone driving a 50mpg car the same distance. You make a good point about providing ‘relief’ to those living in places where car use is more ‘essential’. Thanks for replying in a constructive way! |
