It's worth remembering that when Boris was first elected Mayor, the plan was in place to replace the signalling on the Piccadilly line by 2014, using the Thales Seltrac 40 system.
Somebody in his administration had the wizard wheeze of giving the work to Bombardier instead.
Bombardier worked on it for a while until it became apparent (aficionados believe it was bleedin' obvious from day 1) that they couldn't deliver.
So TfL cancelled Bombardier, went back out to tender and got only one response .... from Thales, Seltrac 40.
Result of intervention by Boris' administration - delay of an initial 7 years, though 10 now seems more likely, followed by installation of exactly the same system as previously specified, no doubt at a hugely inflated price.
Still, never mind, Boris is now Foreign Secretary.
