"Surely if the peak time frequency is reduced by a stop at TG the problem could be resolved by adding additional trains ?" There are a couple of problems with this: - adding more trains means the trains would need to run closer together to maintain a particular service frequency. The current signalling won't support this. - where do additional trains come from? The current stock of Piccadilly line trains is based upon the current frequency of service plus stock for replacing trains going out of service. Additional 40 year old Piccadilly trains can't be ordered from Amazon, overnight delivery... A consequence of London Underground evolution from independent, privately owned lines is that train stock tends to be specific to a particular line and signalling, so you just can't take trains from one line and run it on another. The frequency of service of a line affects so many things, such as the number of trains needed, the number of trains needed for replacements, space needed for overnight stabling, staffing and rostering (assuming there are still drivers...) so it is one of the key decisions made early on when planning upgrades and operations and just can't be changed on a whim. |
