So far in this thread, instances have been quoted of old people in care homes. Our youngest daughter has had MS for over half her life (she's now 53), and has been in a care home for about 8 years after living with us for as long as we could manage.She is happy there, but her quality of life is poor. Because of our own state of health - I am my wife's primary carer, and she's just been told she has dementia - we are unable to visit unless our middle daughter takes us. She and her husband are quite marvellous in fitting time for Michelle into their busy lives, and the eldest sister, living abroad, does what she can. Money from the sale of Michelle's house went on fees years ago, and now she's supported by Harrow, site of the care home, though she's never lived in that borough. Perhaps that's an anomaly that could be addressed. But the point I wanted to make is that a family can have care needs that cover more than one generation, and debate and policy about care need to be aware of this.
