Jon, governments of all persuasions are, have been , and always will be, deaf to anything that sounds vaguely like common sense.
Tessa, the tax 'rate' you mention, whatever it may be that will enable the government to provide the services that are necessary for the care of the elderly, is miniscule in relation to the obscene amounts of money that are spent and wasted by the government on all manner of projects like Defence Procurement programs, IT systems, the NHS, Overseas Aid, Green rubbish, to name but a few. Oh, I forgot, Kids Company. It's how the money is spent that is the most important factor. There is nobody, or company, that can realistically do anything about it - any associated debts accumulated through incompetence, ignorance, stupidity, or whatever, are simply written off and/or absorbed into this monstrous financial black hole, and everything continues as normal.  A wonderful system. As Richard said, "So much for our caring society". We can find millions and millions of pounds for all these refugees, migrants, dispossessed etc, but effectively nothing for our own huge social problems regarding the elderly, the poor, the homeless and countless others. Doesn't make a lot of sense does it?
