The attack on www.richmond-online.co.uk and other community web sites by Richmond Council is an unbelievably stupid act on their part. As I understand it none of the volunteers actually work for Richmond Council but nevertheless their employers have been approached by the Council with a view to coercing them to stop contributing. Although he may be getting his henchman to do the dirty work, Tony Arbour must have sanctioned this. He has been satirised by the sites and is clearly exacting a petty revenge. The sites aren't like this one in that they don't carry advertising and are run totally by volunteers. It was probably the most effective network of its kind in the UK. They are a model for the kind of grass roots community involvement that the Government is trying to encourage and which is essential if e-Government is ever going to be a reality in this country. If Tony Arbour is successful in closing them down then the irony is that he will probably have to spend millions of Richmond's tax payer's money on rebuilding a similar network. Although the official one probably won't feature him dressed as a member of Village People. |
