He clearly did the wrong thing by accepting a caution, but that notwithstanding I can't see how getting involved in a minor fracas (presumably with other lads of a similar age?) ten years ago makes your son a less suitable person to be around children.

If he gets the opportunity to explain himself at an interview, I would be inclined to be straight with the interviewer who may well be sympathetic to his predicament and impressed by his candour.  It's a life experience, he should turn it into a positive if at all possible.
